Where can we find peace?

Do you need peace? Do you want security? I'm convinced there's no real security or peace in this world. They aren't found in our military, our technology, our political institutions, in our ocean borders. You will only find them by putting your faith in Jesus, and trusting your life to him. Jesus offers us eternal peace and eternal security. Everything else leaves us without peace.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:27, NIV)

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30, NIV)

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. (John 16:33, NIV)

The recent events remind me of something that has always been true: our time on this earth is short, and we don't know when or how our lives will end. Those who died on September 11th didn't expect to die. Those who knew Jesus as their Savior are with him in heaven now. Those who did not, tragically, are lost forever. There's no time to lose. The Bible is clear that Jesus is the one and only way of salvation. It doesn't matter how devoutly you believe something else; it cannot save you from death or give you peace. As the scientist Blaise Pascal said, "There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of every man, which only God can fill through His Son Jesus Christ."

I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6, NIV)

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. (John 3:16-18, NIV)

Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved. (Acts 16:31, NIV)

God gave us free will. It is not his desire for people to die in their sins, but he allows us that choice. Apparently God considers the benefits of a freely chosen loving relationship with us to be worth the risk of losing those who won't turn to him.

For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live! (Ezekiel 18:32, NIV)

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9, NIV)
