A couple of acronyms...

SDG: Soli Deo Gloria

The famous Baroque composer, Johann Sebastian Bach (Dan's favorite!) wrote this acronym at the end of each of his Cantata scores, and many of his other works. Soli Deo Gloria means "To the Glory of God Alone." He did this to signify his sincere desire to serve God through his music. Bach himself said, "Music's only purpose should be for the glory of God and the re-creation of the human spirit."

I feel the same way about my photography – my purpose in shooting, and sharing, photos of natural scenes is to capture a small bit of the incredible creative beauty of God, and in so doing, to glorify him. So, you'll notice I've started adding "SDG" to my photo pages.

EDIMGIAFAD: Every Day In Middle Georgia Is Armed Forces Appreciation Day

This is the Warner Robins motto. Warner Robins, population around 50,000, is the home of Robins AFB, which employs about 19,000. So, you can tell the base dominates our local economy. We have a very active Chamber of Commerce (Dan used to represent his company, Bering Straits Aerospace Services, on their Aerospace Industries Committee), and they promote the concept of EDIMGIAFAD.

The hedge is in the center of Warner Robins, and is maintained by the Chamber. We also see EDIMGIAFAD all over town on various business signs.

The idea, of course, is that while other communities might have a once-a-year "Appreciation Day" for the Armed Forces, or for one of the services, here in our area, we appreciate the contributions of the military all the time!

Originally created as an acronym for "Every Day In Middle Georgia Is Air Force Appreciation Day", it was expanded a few years ago to include all the armed forces, to better reflect the joint service contributions to our national defense. Even right here at Robins AFB, we have a resident Marine Corps Reserve helicopter unit, and we perform depot maintenance on aircraft belonging to the Navy and the Coast Guard.
